President Trump will deliver his first State of the Union of his second term tonight at 9 p.m. ET in the House Chamber at the U.S. Capitol. Your BRIGHT writer is thankful she’s in central time and hopeful it’s on the shorter side. Can we limit the standing ovations?
Time noted the speech is during a Department of Homeland Security shutdown tied to a dispute over immigration enforcement, a recent Supreme Court decision striking down Trump’s emergency tariffs, and possible tensions with Iran ahead of talks in Geneva. On top of all that, is a layer of slushy show and rain that fell overnight on Monday and refroze overnight in DC.
The Hill reported the speech will draw a wide range of guests spotlighting immigration, law enforcement, foreign policy, and high-profile criminal cases.
Rep. Peter Stauber invited YouTuber Nick Shirley and journalist David Hoch, known for viral videos examining daycare fraud in Minnesota. Several women who spoke out about Jeffrey Epstein are also attending, including family members invited by Democratic lawmakers Jamie Raskin and Ro Khanna. Claire Lai, daughter of jailed Hong Kong publisher Jimmy Lai, will attend as a guest of Rep. Chris Smith.
Democrats including Ilhan Omar are bringing constituents affected by immigration enforcement. Lawmakers have also invited sheriffs and business executives, including a CEO involved in the Supreme Court tariffs case.
Finally, Rep. Randy Fine’s guest will be his dad, Alan Fine, who will be bringing his seeing-eye service dog, Sadie. Rep. Fine told Fox News Digital, “I think it's also important, given the issues that I burst into the public consciousness last week, to talk about the importance of our dogs as Americans. My father's seeing-eye dog is part of our family and allows him to live his life, and I'm going to fight like hell against anyone who wants to take it away.”
Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger will deliver the Democratic rebuttal following Trump’s remarks. By then, there will be images of being out of Virginia and happily living in Texas lulling me to sleep…
