Zelensky (Again): “Thank you, America!”
The House approved $95 billion in foreign aid, including $61 billion for Ukraine. All Democrats and over 100 Republicans voted for the bill. The AP reported that in addition to Ukraine, aid to Israel and other allies was also passed, along with measures targeting TikTok.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky posted his thanks on X.
Speaker Mike Johnson faced resistance within his party but succeeded in pushing the bill. Critics focused on importance of domestic issues and opposed increased spending. Rep. Thomas Massie posted video of cheering Democrats in the House waving Ukrainian flags, noting, “This is the U.S. House of Representatives under the direction of Speaker Mike Johnson. Democrats are celebrating his total capitulation with no victory for securing our border.”
President Biden urged swift Senate approval. It shouldn’t be a problem based on Senate leadership remarks. From AP:
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., announced the Senate would begin procedural votes on the package Tuesday, saying, “Our allies across the world have been waiting for this moment.”
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, as he prepared to overcome objections from his right flank next week, said, “The task before us is urgent. It is once again the Senate’s turn to make history.”
How is history being made? Ukraine has already received billions. The Council on Foreign Relations reported in February:
The Joe Biden administration and the U.S. Congress have directed about $75 billion in assistance to Ukraine, which includes humanitarian, financial, and military support, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, a German research institute. (This figure does not include all war-related U.S. spending, such as aid to allies.)
