Will DOJ Report Affect Biden’s Campaign?
A DOJ report questioning President Biden's senility has Democrats concerned it may hinder efforts to win the election in November. No apparent concern over whether he can run the country, just on whether he can win. The Hill reported that Democrats reject the portrayal by special counsel Robert Hur, accusing him of political smears. They fear the report fuels GOP claims of Biden's unfit due to age. Hur cited Biden's sympathetic image and poor memory for not pressing charges. Biden vehemently defended himself, but his combative press event received criticism.
“I’m well-meaning, and I’m an elderly man, and I know what the hell I’m doing,” he said.
“I’ve been president; I put this country back on its feet. I don’t need his recommendation.”Yet the event later turned combative when Biden opened the floor to questions and clashed with some of the reporters in the room over the public perception of his health and mental fitness — exchanges that churned headlines and caused even some of Biden’s Democratic allies to denounce his strategy.
Most Democrats continue to rally behind Biden, downplaying the report's significance amidst a fast-moving news cycle. They anticipate it'll fade in importance against other political developments. However, Democratic strategist James Carville isn’t as optimistic. Regarding the decision to once again skip the traditional Super Bowl interview last night, Carville said on CNN, “It’s the biggest television audience, not even close, and you get a chance to do a 20, 25-minute interview on that day, and you don’t do it, that’s a kind of sign that the staff or yourself doesn’t have much confidence in you, there’s no other way to read this.”
