Will Democrats Defend Biden’s $6 Billion Deal with Iran?
According to The Hill, Democrats are facing pressure to address the controversial $6 billion Iranian assets deal. Following recent terror attacks by Hamas, Senate Democrats are urged to investigate Iran's involvement and possibly freeze the funds. Some Democrats, including Jon Tester and Joe Manchin, call for halting the transfer of Iranian assets. Secretary of State Antony Blinken insists the money is for humanitarian purposes, but Senate Republicans demand an investigation into the deal and its implications on terrorism.
More from The Hill:
Secretary of State Antony Blinken is pushing back on Republican claims that the money released to Iran will help Hamas, which is funded by Iran. He has emphasized none of the money from the frozen account has been spent, and that it may only be used for humanitarian assistance under close supervision by the Treasury Department.
Michael O’Hanlon, a senior fellow specializing in foreign policy at the Brookings Institution, said the political optics of the prisoner exchange aren’t good for the Biden administration but questioned whether anything can be done about it now.
“That $6 billion deal looks worse and worse,” he said. “But I’m not sure it’s possible to get it back.”
In similar reporting, Axios focuses on “vulnerable Democrats,” writing, “At least six Senate Democrats up for re-election next year have joined Republicans in calling for President Biden to re-freeze $6 billion in Iranian assets made available as part of a U.S. prisoner exchange last month.”
So, does that mean the safe ones aren’t expected to condemn this disastrous decision?
