White House Announces Release of $6 Billion to Iran in Prisoner Swap
Yesterday, September 11, the Biden administration announced that it authorized the release of five American citizens detained in Iran by issuing sanctions waivers to enable the transfer of $6 billion in frozen Iranian funds from South Korea to Qatar. In return, the U.S. will release five Iranian prisoners held in the United States. The details has been known since mid-August, but the announcement yesterday was odd timing.
The AP reported that some argue that this deal will benefit Iran's economy and raise concerns about U.S. national security. The prisoners’ identities have not been disclosed, but it is expected that the detainees will be released soon. The sanctions waivers apply to various foreign financial institutions involved in the fund transfer.

Not only is the deal a massive payday of needed resources for the normally pariah-status regime in Tehran, it is an utterly asinine deal that only further incentivizes Iran and its proxies to continue targeting U.S. citizens for abduction and detention. The Biden administration's deal sends a dangerous message directly to Iran and its tyrannical regime: each U.S. citizen held captive by Iran is worth one Iranian citizen held in the U.S. plus some $1.2 billion.
