U.S. Treasury Secretary Says She’s Committed to Ukraine’s Economic Recovery
In an interview with CNN while making a surprise visit to Ukraine, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in response to bringing inflation down and maintaining a strong job market, “I would say, ‘So far, so good.’”
She continued, “Obviously there are risks, and the global situation we face is very uncertain. There can be shocks from it. But look, inflation still is too high, but generally if you look over the last year, inflation has been coming down. And I know the Fed is committed to continuing the process of bringing it down to more normal levels, and I believe they’ll be successful with it.”
Though one wonders how committed she and other officials are to helping struggling Americans given that she was doing the interview from Ukraine and told them that Washington is committed to economically supporting their country. Fox News reported:
Yellen said following talks with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal that the US has provided nearly $50 billion in security, economic and humanitarian assistance and announced another multibillion dollar package to boost the country's economy.
Shmyhal offered thanks to the U.S. for its support and hailed Yellen as a "friend of Ukraine.” He said Ukraine's budget deficit now stands at $38 billion and that the U.S. will provide another $10 billion in assistance by September. Shmyhal and Yellen also discussed sanctions aimed at weakening Russia's economy as well as the possibility of using Russian frozen assets to help in Ukraine's economic recovery.
I know I’m being ridiculous, but I really would prefer he wear a suit and tie when receiving millions of Americans’ tax dollars.
