Trump’s Tariff Tease
CNBC reported President Trump described a new effort by the EU to resume trade talks as a “positive” development, after he agreed to delay a threatened 50% tariff on EU goods until July 9.
“I have just been informed that the E.U. has called to quickly establish meeting dates,” Trump wrote in a post on the Truth Social platform.
“This is a positive event, and I hope that they will, FINALLY, like my same demand to China, open up the European Nations for Trade with the United States of America.”
His comments boosted market sentiment, with U.S. and European stocks rising. President Trump criticized the EU for “slow walking” negotiations and emphasized a desire for open trade, similar to demands made of China. The EU, facing recent U.S. tariffs on goods including autos and steel, signaled readiness to negotiate but warned it won’t accept a deal “at any cost.”
