Trump Touts Unity and Support for Big, Beautiful Bill

During a rare Capitol visit, President Trump pressed House Republicans to back the sweeping One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which includes key planks of his legislative agenda. The Hill reported Trump took a hardline stance, urging unity and directly challenging holdouts over issues like the state and local tax (SALT) deduction and Medicaid reforms. “It’s not a question of holdouts. We have a tremendously unified party,” he insisted.

Behind closed doors, Trump urged lawmakers to “let SALT go,” even confronting Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) with, “If you lose because of SALT, you were going to lose anyway.” On Medicaid, Trump was unequivocal: “Don’t f‑‑‑ around with Medicaid,” opposing major cuts and instead calling for reforms targeting “waste, fraud and abuse.”

He also pushed Republicans to support a four-year debt ceiling hike, warning, “don’t be stupid on the debt ceiling.”

More from The Hill:

If Trump is able to move any lawmakers on the fence, it would prove valuable for GOP leadership given the extremely narrow margins in the House. Republicans can only afford a few defections while still passing the bill in a party-line vote.

After the meeting, Rep. Mark Amodei (R-Nev.) said he thinks Trump probably changed some minds.

“He had them all laughing for 30 minutes,” he said — including at the f-bomb he dropped when talking about leaving Medicaid alone.

But House Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris (R-Md.) said it hadn’t been enough.

“The president, I don’t think convinced enough people that the bill is adequate the way it is,” he said.

This morning, Fox News reported that a tentative deal was reached with SALT-focused holdouts.
