Trump to Appear in Miami Courthouse Today
Yesterday former President Donald Trump traveled to Florida ahead of a court appearance where he faces federal felony charges related to the alleged illegal possession of classified documents and obstruction of the Justice Department's attempts to recover them.
The AP was sure to note that this marks his second time facing criminal charges, but unlike the previous case in New York, this prosecution focuses on actions that prosecutors claim endangered national security. The charges carry the potential for a significant prison sentence under the Espionage Act.
Trump has criticized the Justice Department special counsel, Jack Smith, as "deranged" and claimed political persecution. He also pledged to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate President Joe Biden and his family if he is reelected.
Fox News reported that police presence in Miami increased ahead of Trump’s appearance. In a statement, the Miami Police Department said, “The City of Miami Police Department will work cohesively with our local, state and federal partners to provide any assistance needed in the form of personnel, resources, detours and/or road closures. We're committed to protecting everyone's First Amendment right.”
