Trump the Bro Whisperer
It was announced yesterday that former President Trump will appear on Joe Rogan’s podcast on Friday. It’s just one of several high-profile podcasts he’s been on recently, which has included interviews with Andrew Schulz, Theo Von, and Dave Ramsey. So, the New York Times worries, “Trump’s Bro Whispering Could Cost Democrats Too Many Young Men.”
In a guest essay, the author writes that Generation Z, especially young men, could play a pivotal role in the 2024 presidential election. Polling shows a significant shift, with young men moving away from the Democratic Party and toward Trump. Since 2020, the percentage of young men identifying as Republicans has risen by 14 points, while young women have become slightly more Democratic. The essay says Trump is targeting young men with a “hypermasculine message of strength and defiance into his broader narrative that undermines confidence in democratic institutions.”
The author concludes:
Donald Trump has gained ground with Gen Z by systematically exploiting the fears and insecurities of young men, making them feel that their masculinity and future are under siege. Kamala Harris can counter that narrative by listening and recognizing their fears but also by offering something more profound: a vision of hope, strength and shared purpose.
I haven’t seen a greater disconnect on Trump, Harris and young men. It’s impossible to offer “a vision of hope, strength and shared purpose” for men when Democrats’ goal is to diminish their role in society.
