Trump Gets Red Carpet Treatment in Paris
President-elect Donald Trump received a warm welcome from global leaders during the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, marking his unofficial return to the international stage after winning the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Fox News reported that the event was steeped in ceremony, with Trump greeted by heads of state, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Britain’s Prince William. French President Emmanuel Macron hosted Trump, with their handshake becoming a viral moment.
The AP noted:
An actual red carpet was rolled out for Trump as Macron bestowed the kind of full diplomatic welcome that France offers sitting American presidents, complete with trumpets blaring and members of the Republican Guard in full uniform. It was a clear sign that even though Trump doesn’t take office until Jan. 20, 2025, Macron and other European leaders are already working to win his favor and treating him as America’s representative on the world stage.
Noticeably absent was President Biden, who cited a scheduling conflict. Social media buzzed with comments about Trump’s presidential treatment. Commentators noted the symbolism of the event, portraying Trump as a dominant global figure. The visit, following a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago, showed Trump’s re-emergence as a central figure in global politics, with many leaders seemingly eager to engage with him.
