Trump a ‘Person of Interest’ in January 6 Investigation
Yesterday former President Trump revealed on Truth Social that he has received a letter from special counsel Jack Smith informing him that he is a target of the investigation into the January 6 Capitol breach. The letter gave him four days to report to a grand jury in DC, leading him to believe he might be arrested and indicted. Trump wrote, “THIS WITCH HUNT IS ALL ABOUT ELECTION INTERFERENCE AND A COMPLETE AND TOTAL POLITICAL WEAPONIZATION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT.”
More from Epoch Times:
The Department of Justice has indicted hundreds of people for participating in the breach of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. In two of the most prominent cases, the government convinced juries in Washington that members of the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys, two right-wing groups, were guilty of seditious conspiracy.
Legal experts had previously suggested that the successful prosecution of the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys cases spelled trouble for Trump, who could be snarled with seditious conspiracy charges over parts of the speech he delivered on Jan. 6 and other remarks he made leading up to that day.
Defense attorneys maintained that their clients exercised their First Amendment rights to free speech.
The Proud Boys were convicted even though an FBI informant testified that, to his knowledge, there was no organized plan to storm the building. Instead, he said, “a herd mentality” took hold.
It was also reported last night that federal agents seized the phones of several Trump advisors. The Post Millennial reported:
According to the New York Times, the phones of Boris Epshteyn, described as "an in-house counsel who helps coordinate Mr. Trump’s legal efforts," and campaign strategist Mike Roman, who was director of Election Day operations for Trump’s campaign in 2020.
The phones of John Eastman and Jeffrey Clark were also seized. Clark's phone was seized as part of an investigation into alternate electors.
Those who believe Democrats want Trump as the Republican nominee because he can be beat might be second guessing that theory based on how hard they’re going after him. I think 2016 Trump definitely broke the Left, but I also have no doubt they’d be giving the same treatment to whoever the Republican frontrunner is.
