Texas Debuts New Border Tactic
The Wall Street Journal reported that Texas plans to deploy huge orange buoys in the Rio Grande River to prevent migrants from illegally crossing the border. The buoys will be chained together to create a floating barrier, which officials hope will deter people from attempting to cross the river. Critics argue that the buoys could lead to more drownings and restrict access to the river. The initiative is part of Operation Lone Star, a Texas program launched in 2021 to enhance border control while the federal was absent. The state has faced legal challenges, with a local business owner suing over the installation of the buoys.
Texas responded with “Bring it.”
Governor Abbott countered the critics, tweeting, “We will see you in court. And don't think the Travis Co. Court will be the end of it. This is going to the Supreme Court. Texas has a constitutional right to secure our border.”
