Senate Takes a Stab at Big, Beautiful Bill

The Hill reported that the Senate GOP’s version of President Trump’s big, beautiful bill includes permanent 2017 tax cuts, capped Medicaid funding, and major revisions to green energy credits.

The bill locks in tax brackets and raises the child tax credit to $2,200, while eliminating taxes and capping deductions for tips, overtime, and car loan interest. It also “effectively caps provider taxes at 3.5 percent by 2031” for Medicaid expansion states, a shift expected to anger some Republicans over hospital funding cuts. The bill enforces Medicaid work requirements for more parents and softens the House’s green energy deadlines, requiring construction by 2028, not electricity production. It maintains a $10,000 SALT cap, which Senate Majority Leader John Thune calls a “marker” for negotiations, despite the SALT caucus House members calling the move “DEAD ON ARRIVAL.” The bill also proposes a $5 trillion debt ceiling hike.

Newsmax noted that Sen. Rand Paul said he’s “not an absolute no” on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, but remains firmly opposed to raising the debt ceiling by $5 trillion. On his conversation over the weekend with the President, he said, “I've let him know that I'm not an absolute no. I can be a yes.” Paul supports the tax cuts, saying, “I actually agree with Art Laffer... we cut rates we actually get more revenue.” But he insists, “If they want my vote, they'll have to negotiate.” Paul urged, “Separate out the debt ceiling and have a separate vote on it... I will negotiate if they come to me.” He also added, “So far they've been sending their attack dogs after me, and that's not a great persuasion technique.”
