Second Train Derailment in Ohio
On Saturday evening there was another derailment of a Norfolk Southern train in Ohio. Thankfully, no hazardous materials were on the 28-car train and no one was hurt. More from NBC News:
"Four empty non-hazardous material tank cars" were involved in the derailment, which had previously carried diesel exhaust fluid and an additive commonly used in wastewater treatment, [Kraig Barner, Norfolk Southern’s general manager of operations] said.
One car containing plastic pellets was involved, and a small amount spilled out onto the soil, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency Director Ann Vogel said. The pellets are not hazardous.
Power lines were also involved, which meant agencies weren't able to begin cleanup operations until Sunday morning.
It was not immediately known what caused the derailment.
"This derailment, as all derailments, will be fully investigated and the findings will be turned over to the Federal Railroad Administration," Barner said.
On Sunday, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said he wished he would have gone to East Palestine, Ohio sooner. He also said critics of his job as Transportation Secretary have been unfair. He told CNN, “It’s really rich to see some of these folks – the former president, these Fox hosts – who are literally lifelong card-carrying members of the East Coast elite, whose top economic policy priority has always been tax cuts for the wealthy, and who wouldn’t know their way around a T.J. Maxx if their life depended on it, to be presenting themselves as if they genuinely care about the forgotten middle of the country. You think Tucker Carlson knows the difference between a T.J. Maxx and a Kohl’s?”
CNN attempted to help explain in the story on this disastrous interview:
Buttigieg came into the Cabinet knowing this would be an odd transition – he’s the only winner of the Iowa caucuses and one-time Jimmy Kimmel guest host to take a lower-level Cabinet job. He didn’t realize just how much focus there would be on a Cabinet role that was once seen as mostly apolitical in past administrations.
It seems Buttigieg didn’t know the difference between being a small town mayor and the head of a major federal agency. Neither did those advising Biden to nominate Mayor Pete.
In the words of Mary Katherine Ham…
