Fox News reported during live coverage that Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle appeared before the House Oversight Committee on Monday to answer questions about the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Whether they got any actual answers is another thing.
In her opening statement, Cheatle said, “The Secret Service's solemn mission is to protect our nation's leaders. On July 13th, we failed.”
Rep. Nancy Mace criticized Cheatle for failing to provide requested audio and video recordings, calling her “completely dishonest.” Cheatle admitted the agency’s failure to prevent the shooting, describing it as a “colossal failure” but refused to resign, asserting she was best suited to lead the Secret Service.
Rep. Byron Donalds and other lawmakers called for Cheatle’s immediate resignation due to “gross incompetence.” Cheatle acknowledged receiving multiple warnings about a suspicious individual before the shooting but lacked clarity on the timeline and response. Despite several GOP lawmakers pressing for her resignation, Cheatle maintained her stance, emphasizing ongoing internal and external investigations.
Politico reported, “‘It is my firm belief you should resign,’ Committee Chair JAMES COMER (R-Ky.) told Cheatle at the outset, describing the shooting as “preventable” and a ‘horrifying moment in American history.’”
Notably, the top Democrat on the committee, Rep. Jamie Raskin, also called for Cheatle’s resignation as director.
This is government leadership we’re talking about and it’s pretty rare for anyone to get thrown out for incompetence. However, it does happen. As Guy Benson noted, “The first person get thrown out of a major job within the Biden-Harris operation, due to a high-profile profile, was Joe Biden.”
