PA SWAT Team Speaks Out on What Led to Trump Assassination Attempt
ABC News interviewed several members of the Beaver County, Pennsylvania SWAT Team who spoke out for the first time on the lack of communication and planning among security teams that led to the attempted assassination of former President Trump.
On July 13, Beaver County SWAT sniper Gregory Nicol said he noticed a suspicious man at a Butler, Pennsylvania rally where former President Donald Trump was about to speak. The man, later identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, had a rangefinder and an unattended bike and backpack. Nicol alerted fellow snipers and command, but no immediate action was taken. Within an hour, Crooks opened fire from a rooftop, wounding Trump, killing one person, and injuring two others.
The SWAT team criticized the lack of communication and planning with the Secret Service, who had ultimate responsibility for security. This incident has led to the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle and ongoing investigations into the security failures.
Beaver County District Attorney Nate Bible emphasized the need for better planning to prevent such incidents in the future. Assistant Beaver County SWAT leader Mike Priolo said, “This one is something that we'll always carry with us.”
