New Reports Focus on Secret Service During Butler Assassination Attempt

The New York Post reported the Secret Service’s failures during the July 2024 assassination attempt on President Trump were described in two Senate reports as a “cascade of preventable failures.” Senators Chuck Grassley and Rand Paul condemned the agency’s “inexcusable negligence” before, during, and after the attack. The agency denied multiple requests for added security, including anti-drone systems, because “resources had already been allocated.” A request for a Counter Assault Team liaison was also ignored, leaving coordination gaps on the ground.

Ten days before the rally, agents were briefed on a threat but failed to share it due to the agency’s “siloed practice for sharing” intelligence. The report also found that technology failures also hampered communication, with anti-drone systems malfunctioning and poor cell reception preventing real-time updates. The agency used a jumbotron and flag for cover after declining to block the shooter’s line of sight with farm equipment.

Senator Paul said, “What happened in Butler, Pennsylvania, was not just a tragedy—it was a scandal. The United States Secret Service failed to act on credible intelligence, failed to coordinate with local law enforcement, and failed to prevent an attack that nearly took the life of a then-former president.”

Senator Grassley also urged reforms to prevent another Butler.
