Is Newsom Running for President?
Vice President and “Border Czar” Kamala Harris seems to think so and she’s not happy. California Governor Gavin Newsom's upcoming debate with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Fox News, moderated by Sean Hannity, has caused frustration among some of President Joe Biden's and the Vice President’s political advisors, according to Business Insider. They are concerned that the debate might suggest a contested primary, potentially complicating the party's unity around Biden for the next year's election. Some advisors also worry the debate will be seen as Newsom's attempt to position himself ahead of Vice President Harris in the 2028 presidential race.
More from Business Insider:
An outside advisor to Harris told the outlet that Newsom's actions were "disrespectful."
"Joe Biden is running with Kamala Harris. That's the Democratic ticket," the outside advisor said.
The debate might not happen, as the two sides had gone back-and-forth over the terms of the event.
Harris declined a debate invitation from DeSantis after she criticized him over new standards adopted by the Florida Department of Education regarding the teaching of slavery in public schools.
However, the Biden campaign, publicly at least, doesn’t see a problem. Biden campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz said to NBC News, “Governor Newsom is a strong partner and surrogate for the Biden-Harris campaign. We coordinate closely on campaigning, whether it's fundraising or media. When he brought the debate idea to us, we endorsed it.”
