Iranian-Backed Attacks Continue in Red Sea

The Daily Wire reported that Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists in Yemen persisted in disrupting international commerce by attacking shipping vessels in the Red Sea. On Friday, they threatened the Liberian-flagged Motor Vessel MSC ALANYA, and later, a UAV launched from Houthi territory struck the Motor Vessel AL JASRAH. Subsequently, two ballistic missiles were launched at international shipping lanes, hitting the MV PALATIUM 3.

The AP reported on Saturday that both U.S. and U.K. navy ships shot down drones over the Red Sea.

U.S. Central Command said that the destroyer USS Carney “successfully engaged 14 unmanned aerial systems” launched from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.

The drones “were shot down with no damage to ships in the area or reported injuries,” Central Command tweeted.

U.K. Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said that HMS Diamond fired a Sea Viper missile and destroyed a drone that was “targeting merchant shipping.” The overnight action is the first time the Royal Navy has shot down an aerial target in anger since the 1991 Gulf War.

Shapps said attacks on commercial ships in the global trade artery by Yemen’s Houthi rebels “represent a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security.”

U.S. officials expressed frustration with President Biden's perceived inaction, especially since he delisted the Houthis from the official terrorist list. Politico reported that the Biden Administration has been “reluctant” to respond, but that the uptick in attacks is causing discussion about strike options in Yemen.
