House Passes Two Articles of Impeachment Against Mayorkas
Yesterday House Republicans impeached DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for failure to secure the southern border. He now has the distinction of being the first Cabinet secretary impeachment in almost 150 years. Mayorkas faces trial in the Senate, which expected to be dismissed swiftly by the Democrat-controlled body. Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene posted, “I just delivered my Articles of Impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas to the United States Senate. Mayorkas is derelict of his duty and must be removed from office. Chuck Schumer: HOLD THE TRIAL!”
Red State reported the White House responded in a memo, saying “this effort is a complete waste of time that constitutional and legal experts have said is ‘unconstitutional’ and that even Senate Republicans have made clear they don’t want to focus on.”
ABC News reported:
Top Republicans have demanded a complete Senate trial.
"It would be beneath the Senate's dignity to shrug off our clear responsibility and fail to give the charges we'll hear today the thorough consideration they deserve," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said. "I'll strenuously oppose the effort to table the articles of impeachment and avoid looking at the Biden administration border crisis squarely in the face."
Still, chances of a full-scale trial are slim, though exactly how the impeachment proceedings will play out is still unclear.
The Senate has the option to either dismiss the trial outright or to require a committee to hear it instead, which Democrats are largely expected to pursue.
Bob Hoge at Red State wrote, “This impeachment is not baseless, however, and even if it doesn't get very far in the Senate, Republicans are right to expose the catastrophic job the secretary has done. While it may not accomplish the goal of fixing the illegal immigration problem right away, it shows the American public the depths of the issue, and they can use that information to hopefully vote for a different path in October.”
