Here We Go Again…
Like the movie Groundhog Day, we are once again reliving threats from Capitol Hill of a government shutdown. The Hill reported that Congress faces a government shutdown as leaders struggle to reach a funding deal by Friday's deadline. The plan, including five full-year spending bills and a DHS funding extension, was delayed due to disagreements over immigration and border security.
ABC News reported that talks were expected to produce legislative text by Sunday, but missed deadlines raise shutdown concerns. Border enforcement funding becomes a sticking point, with Republicans seeking more amidst the illegal immigrant surge. Democrats, however, are pushing for pay equity in the Transportation Security Administration. Quite a stark difference in priorities. I wonder what Americans think is most important?
More from ABC News:
During the White House press briefing Monday, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said DHS is in need of additional funding to do their jobs effectively.
"We believe DHS needs additional funding to deal with the security operations and much more at the border," Jean-Pierre said.
Raj Shah, a spokesman for Johnson, said House Republicans are working together to "reach consensus."
"House Republicans will continue to work in good faith to reach consensus on the appropriations bills that reprioritizes DHS funding towards enforcing border and immigration laws," Shah said in a statement.
Sources says the other five funding bills are complete and agreed upon. The other bills include funding agencies such as the departments of Defense, State and Education.
