Gov. Abbott Promises to Work ‘Swiftly’ on Pardon of Sgt. Perry
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has promised to pardon US Army Sergeant Daniel Perry, who was charged with murder in the shooting of a protester during a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Austin in 2020. Perry maintains that he acted in self-defense, and his case has become a rallying point for supporters of gun rights. Governor Abbott criticized the charges against Perry as politically motivated and pledged to protect the rights of law-abiding gun owners. In a statement, Governor Abbott noted that the Texas Constitution limits his authority on pardons, but that he will recommend the Board of Pardons and Paroles review the case so he can approve the pardon.
