Fund Raises Money to Release ‘Cop City’ Arsonists
Yesterday the Atlanta Solidarity Fund hurried raise money to get the 23 people arrested for setting fire to the site of a police training facility in Atlanta known as “Cop City.” The Fund tweeted, “As always, we are committed to providing bail assistance and access to legal representation for everyone arrested protesting. We are already coordinating a network of lawyers to respond. Please donate to help us continue this work. Solidarity means nobody faces repression alone!”
In a statement, the Atlanta Police Department said, “They changed into black clothing and entered the construction area and began to throw large rocks, bricks, Molotov cocktails, and fireworks at police officers. The agitators destroyed multiple pieces of construction equipment by fire and vandalism.”
Fox News reported, “Atlanta police identified 23 suspects charged with domestic terrorism after allegedly launching an attack Sunday night against the construction site for a police and fire training facility dubbed ‘Cop City’. The Atlanta Police Department revealed all but two of the arrestees are from out of state.”
The violence and arson is part of what the “Defend the Atlanta Forest” movement is calling a “Week of Action.” The Atlanta police asked that any other activity be “peaceful.” If the fund is successful in getting their would-be clients out on bail, that might be unlikely given that they boasted on Twitter of their success given that “not a single human or animal was hurt in the liberation of the forest today.”
