Florida Braces for Hurricane Idalia
I grew up in Tallahassee, Florida, and have been through several both there and when I lived in St. Augustine on the Atlantic side. There will be jokes about “Florida Man” not evacuating, but even the saltiest Floridians really do take hurricanes seriously. I’ll be praying for family and friends in the hurricane’s path and hope you will, too.
The Weather Channel reported:
The center of the storm is over the southern Gulf of Mexico about 300 miles south-south of Tallahassee. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 100 mph as of 5 p.m. EDT.
Outer bands of rain containing gusty winds are rotating into much of Florida, into far southern Alabama and south Georgia. Several locations in south and southwest Florida have clocked wind gusts from 40 to 50 mph.
Water levels were running about 1 to 2 feet above normal from Naples to Fort Myers and the Tampa Bay area with the midday high tide. Some low-lying areas have seen inundation from this coastal flooding.
Fox Weather reported, “Life-threatening winds and heavy rains will come in ahead of the storm, with current forecast models suggesting landfall around the Big Bend area Wednesday morning, between the 7 a.m. to. noon ET timeframe, the FOX Forecast Center said. The storm will then move closer to the coast of the Carolinas on Thursday.”
