Feds Charge Repeat Offender in Fatal Stabbing of Ukrainian Refugee

Fox News reported federal prosecutors have charged Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr. with “committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system” after he fatally stabbed Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska aboard a Charlotte light rail train on August 22. Brown, who has 14 prior arrests, was already facing state murder charges.

Attorney General Pam Bondi vowed to seek the maximum penalty, saying, “We will seek the maximum penalty for this unforgivable act of violence — he will never again see the light of day as a free man.”

FBI Director Kash Patel condemned the attack, saying, “The brutal attack on Iryna Zarutska on the Charlotte light rail was a disgraceful act that should never happen in America.”

Many have highlighted the tragedy of Zarutska fleeing Ukraine’s war only to be murdered in America. Loved ones described her as creative, kind, and determined to build a new life. Her family insisted she be buried in the U.S., saying, “She loved America.”

In a video from the Oval Office, President Trump said, “She was slaughtered by a deranged monster, who was roaming free after 14 prior arrests. We cannot allow a depraved criminal element of violent repeat offenders to continue spreading destruction and death throughout our country. We have to respond with force and strength. We have to be vicious, just like they are. It's the only thing they understand.”
