Fallout from SCOTUS Decision on Tariffs

The Daily Caller reported President Trump announced he will raise his temporary global tariff from 10% to 15%, calling it the “fully allowed, and legally tested” level after the Supreme Court rejected his earlier action under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Invoking Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, Trump wrote he would raise tariffs on countries he said have been “‘ripping’ the U.S. off for decades.” He added the administration will issue “new and legally permissible Tariffs.” Trump criticized the ruling as “ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily anti-American,” while imposing a 10% surcharge for 150 days to address a “large and serious balance-of-payments deficit.”

Just the News reported business groups are demanding refunds after the ruling. The decision could trigger up to $175 billion in repayments, according to the Penn Wharton Budget Model. Neil Bradley of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said, “Swift refunds of the impermissible tariffs will be meaningful.” But International Chamber of Commerce chief John Denton cautioned, “Companies should not expect a simple process.”
