Duel Summer: The Big Political Events Coming Up

Or did I mean cruel? The Hill reported that this will be a busy, political summer. It seems like we just finished a busy, political spring! Summer 2024 will feature several pivotal political events on both sides: President Biden and former President Trump will be officially nominated by their parties, and they will participate in two debates. Then, there’s the sentencings. Trump will also face sentencing for criminal convictions on July 11. Hunter Biden will be sentenced on felony charges at to-be determined date. The Republican and Democratic conventions will follow in July and August, respectively, with possible adaptations due to legal issues.

Organizers for the Republican convention are reportedly planning for the possibility that Trump will not be able to attend, in part because of his sentence being handed down four days earlier. NBC reported that preparations are underway for Trump to accept the nomination in Milwaukee or his Mar-a-Lago property, though a Trump campaign adviser told the outlet that convention planning has only included Trump accepting the nomination in person. 

Meanwhile, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) was put in a tough spot with Biden potentially unable to make the ballot in Ohio because of the state’s Aug. 7 certification deadline. The Ohio Legislature has yet to fix the issue, and so the DNC plans to virtually nominate Biden in a roll-call vote ahead of the convention. 

Candidates have also historically seen a slight polling bump after their conventions, which could give a boost to either candidate, at least temporarily. 

The GOP will also be on Veepstakes watch. A TPUSA straw poll picked Ohio Senator JD Vance over the weekend as VP favorite. Am I the only who wants all Senators out of contention? We need to keep them where they are because no seat is guaranteed!
