Democrats Plead Their Case for Power as Chicago Boards Up
Beginning today, Chicago is preparing to host the Democratic National Convention. The Epoch Times reported that business owners near the convention sites are expressing dissatisfaction with the limited communication from authorities regarding potential disruptions. The event is expected to draw tens of thousands of protesters, particularly focused on the Biden-Harris administration’s support for Israel against Hamas. The coalition behind the protests, which calls itself the March on the DNC 2024, is set to consist of at least 170 groups. The demonstrations, the coalition said on its website, will be on Aug. 19 and Aug. 22. A judge this week denied the coalition’s request for a preliminary injunction to expand the protest zone, but organizers are still fighting for more room.
Law enforcement has been heavily involved in preparation, with over 3,000 police press credentials approved and extensive security measures, including fencing and a significant police presence. Cook County Circuit Court Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans announced in July that they would prepare court facilities for mass arrests from protests surrounding the DNC, according to a press release. In case the protests become violent, several local businesses are using plywood to block doors and windows to prevent potential destruction, WGN Chicago reported.
