In a late night vote, the bill passed one hurdle after making it out of another committee. Politico reported, “In the end, the four fiscal conservatives who tanked the first House Budget vote on Friday switched their votes to ‘present’ last night, allowing the bill to move forward, after haggling with GOP leaders all weekend. Though the agreed concessions have not yet been made public — Johnson called them “minor modifications” — holdout Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) indicated they included a quicker timeline for new Medicaid work requirements and the further slashing of clean-energy tax credits.”
Over the weekend, Fox News reported President Trump’s expansive legislative proposal, dubbed his “big, beautiful bill,” was stalled in the House Budget Committee on Friday, after several Republicans—Reps. Chip Roy, Josh Brecheen, Andrew Clyde, and Ralph Norman—voted against it. The bill, which consolidates efforts from 11 House committees, aimed to advance Trump’s priorities on border security, immigration, taxes, energy, defense, and raising the debt limit. Fiscal conservatives criticized delayed provisions, particularly Medicaid work requirements set for 2029 and the gradual phase-out of green energy subsidies.
“Only in Washington are we expected to bet on the come that in five years, then everything will work. Then we will solve the problem. We have got to change the direction of this town. And to my colleagues and other side of the aisle, yes, that means touching Medicaid,” said Rep. Roy during debate.
House GOP leaders, including Speaker Mike Johnson is still gunning for a Memorial Day win, with the committee back at it last night.
It’s on to the House Rules Committee, with a showdown expected later this week.
