Biden Tells Democrats He’s Rejecting Calls to Drop Out
President Biden firmly rejected calls for him to drop out of the 2024 presidential race in a letter to congressional Democrats, emphasizing it would undermine voter preferences and his record.
He wrote, “I have heard the concerns that people have — their good faith fears and worries about what is at stake in this election. I am not blind to them… I can respond to all this by saying clearly and unequivocally: I wouldn’t be running again if I did not absolutely believe I was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024.”
Biden urged party unity following criticism of his debate performance and growing doubts about his candidacy. He cited his legislative achievements and commitment to democracy as reasons to continue. The Hill reported that despite some Democratic lawmakers urging him to step aside, Biden affirmed his recent campaign activities, including travels and speeches, and plans for increased public engagement, such as a press conference at the NATO summit.
Ben Domenech sums up the Democrats’ situation in The Transom:
As I see it, the problem for Democrats now is that there are five different power centers operating around this story at the current moment, and they disagree about what needs to happen next:
The Biden Family.
On the surface, it looks like a growing number of representatives within each of these factions think Joe needs to go... except for the number one category, which looks like the only one that matters. And while some are entertaining the Sorkinesque possibility of a competitive convention, most are aware that the only realistic option is a shift to Kamala Harris, who has been so unimpressive as vice president that significant portions of each faction are as doubtful about her as they are about Joe — especially those who have experience winning elections.
