Biden Floats Use of 14th Amendment on Debt Ceiling
Over the weekend President Biden called Republican demands in the debt ceiling negotiations "unacceptable" but expressed hope for a resolution. He criticized the Republicans' demand for spending cuts as a condition for raising the borrowing authority and mentioned exploring the 14th Amendment to raise the debt ceiling without Congress. Politico explained, “Legal experts argue that Section 4 of the 14th Amendment allows the Treasury Department to keep borrowing money past the debt limit and that it would be unconstitutional for the U.S. to fail to make payments.”
Breitbart reported that the White House accused Republicans of holding the economy hostage and seeking a recession. Republicans argued that the Democrats were responsible for the country's debt and insisted on reducing the deficit through spending cuts instead of tax increases. Failing to reach a deal would have severe economic consequences, including a recession.
More from Breitbart:
Discussions were at an impasse over the weekend in Washington, as both sides traded accusations.
“We’re making 0 demands to avoid default. You’re the only ones with a hostage,” tweeted White House spokesperson Andrew Bates, accusing Republicans of seeking to trigger a recession in the world’s leading economy.
McCarthy, however, tweeted Saturday to say the White House was the one “moving backward.”
“Unfortunately, the socialist wing of the Democrat Party appears to be in control — especially with President Biden out of the country,” he said.
Biden said that McCarthy was likely waiting for him to join in before the talks could be revived.
“My guess is he’s going to want to deal directly with me,” Biden said.
On Fox News, Senator Ted Cruz said, “Biden's position on the 14th Amendment is legally frivolous. By the way, someone else who agreed with that was Barack Obama. The left tried to convince Obama to do this and Obama said, 'No, you can't do this under the Constitution.’”
The New York Times reported on Sunday that President Biden and Speaker McCarthy have agreed to meet on Monday afternoon.
