Biden, Congress Kick the Can Down the Road… Again
On Saturday, President Biden signed a package of six government funding bills, preventing a partial shutdown before a March 22 deadline. The Epoch Times reported the Consolidated Appropriations Act 2024 covers various federal departments at a whopping $460 billion.
The White House said in a statement on March 9 that President Biden had signed into law H.R. 4366, or the “Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024,” which provides $460 billion in appropriations for several federal departments and agencies.
The 1,021-page package consists of annual spending bills that fund six major areas of the federal government: agriculture and rural development; commerce, justice, and science; energy and water development; interior and environment; military construction and veterans affairs; transportation, housing and urban development.
The “bipartisan” effort received support from top Republicans and Democrats, passing the Senate 75–22. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell praised the benefits of the bills. There are still six more bills that are pending.
The House Freedom Caucus opposed the $1.65 trillion omnibus spending bill (total of all 12 bills), urging rejection due to increased spending and lack of Republican priorities.
The group urged Republicans to vote against both halves of the appropriations package, arguing that it “punts on nearly every single Republican policy priority” and surrenders leverage to Democrats by failing to “truly secure the southern border and end the purposeful, dangerous mass release of illegal aliens into the United States.”
Republicans have blamed the Biden administration for the record numbers of illegal immigrants that have flowed into the country since President Biden assumed office.
The House passed the measure 339–85 after Republican negotiators secured conservative wins, which Speaker Johnson noted were “deep cuts to the EPA, ATF, and FBI, which under the Biden Administration have threatened our freedoms and our economy, while it fully funds veterans’ health care.”
So, that’s something 😐
