Americans Divided on the SAVE Act
A Fox News focus group found sharp partisan divides during President Trump’s State of the Union, especially when he urged passage of the SAVE America Act requiring proof of citizenship for federal voting. Democrats’ dial ratings dropped steeply as Trump said the bill would “stop illegal aliens and others who are unpermitted persons from voting in our sacred American elections.” He added, “All voters must show voter ID,” and said opponents resist it because “they want to cheat.” Republicans reacted positively, while Independents landed in between.
The focus group also looked at other topics during the speech. Gender policy proved the most polarizing topic after Trump said, “We must ban it, and we must ban it immediately,” referring to youth gender transitions without parental consent. Fox News noted, “Supporters in the focus group reacted mostly positively to the gender policy remarks, saying things like ‘Protect children. Crazy people there’ and ‘If someone wants to change gender, they should do it as an adult. Period.’”
