A Controlled Demolition: The Hunter Biden Plea Deal
Fox News reported that Hunter Biden agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor counts of willful failure to pay federal income tax. He will also enter into a pretrial diversion agreement for a separate charge of possessing a firearm as an unlawful user of a controlled substance.
The charges stem from a years-long investigation into his tax affairs. According to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware, Hunter Biden failed to pay federal income tax despite earning over $1.5 million annually in 2017 and 2018.
More from Fox News:
Hunter's criminal counsel, Chris Clark of Clark Smith Villazor, said that "with the announcement of two agreements between my client, Hunter Biden, and the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Delaware, it is my understanding that the five-year investigation into Hunter is resolved."
"Hunter will take responsibility for two instances of misdemeanor failure to file tax payments when due pursuant to a plea agreement," Clark said. "A firearm charge, which will be subject to a pretrial diversion agreement and will not be the subject of the plea agreement, will also be filed by the Government."
Clark added: "I know Hunter believes it is important to take responsibility for these mistakes he made during a period of turmoil and addiction in his life. He looks forward to continuing his recovery and moving forward."
House Republicans were not impressed with the claim of taking responsibility. Rep. James Comer tweeted, “Hunter Biden is getting away with a slap on the wrist when growing evidence uncovered by the House Oversight Committee reveals the Bidens engaged in a pattern of corruption, influence peddling, and possibly bribery.”
In yesterday’s Transom, Ben Domenech wrote, “For all that talk about Hunter Biden and ‘the big guy’ and every question left unanswered, the case has apparently ended just as Jonathan Turley predicted: with a controlled demolition to avoid further investigation. And it’s likely to work!”
